Who is Mr. Eclipse?

Fred Espenak NASA Astrophysicist

Fred Espenak

Retired NASA astrophysicist, Fred Espenak, is most well-known for his expertise in eclipses. Espenak spent over 30 years at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, where his passion for eclipses made him NASA’s number-one go-to person for any eclipse expertise.

Over his career, Espenak has written several publications on eclipses including, “Five Millennium Canon of Solar Eclipses” and “Five Millennium Canon of Lunar Eclipses“, which contain detailed maps and information on eclipses over vast timespans. In addition to co-writing “Totality: Eclipses of the Sun,” a very popular publication on eclipses.

Although Fred Espenak might be retired from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, he’s still working with NASA to maintain their official solar eclipse website. Recently, Fred Espenak spoke on Vincennes PBS about the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse. Check out the video below to hear what it’s like to experience a total eclipse of the sun.

Total Solar Eclipse Glasses

Your eyesight is precious and this event is monumental. Total Solar Eclipse Glasses are meant to protect your eyesight. They block out all but about 0.00001% of the Sun’s light. Special filters also block harmful ultraviolet and infrared rays that regular shades can’t handle. Please do not risk your eyesight looking at the Total Solar Eclipse. This isn’t the “don’t stare at the Sun” warning your parents gave you – this is about real, irreversible blindness.
